
A new meta-analysis published in Sports Medicine and reported by News-Medical.net found that combining strength training with aerobic exercise cuts Type 2 diabetes risk more than either modality alone. Across 35 studies and over 90,000 participants, the combination reduced Type 2 diabetes risk by 17–40% depending on dose, with the strongest effect at 150+ minutes per week of combined exercise. For the 88 million Americans with pre-diabetes and the millions more at risk for Type 2 diabetes, this is being framed as the simplest, cheapest, and most accessible prevention strategy ever validated. It is — for preventing Type 2 diabetes. It is not, and cannot be, a reversal for the 38 million Americans who already have it.
What Just Happened
The News-Medical.net coverage summarized a 2026 meta-analysis published in Sports Medicine — the
largest pooled analysis to date of exercise modality and Type 2 diabetes prevention, as detailed in the DZD (German Center for Diabetes Research) report that contributed to the analysis.

- The limitation: This is prevention research, not treatment research. The study enrolled people without Type 2 diabetes at baseline and measured who developed it over time. It does not address what happens to people who already have the disease
The Question Nobody’s Asking
Here’s what every headline about the strength + cardio meta-analysis is leaving out: preventing Type 2 diabetes is not the same as reversing it.
So the real question for the millions of Americans already living with Type 2 diabetes isn’t “how much should I
exercise to prevent diabetes?” It’s “why am I still diabetic in the first place, and what’s actually required to
put it into remission?”
Strength training plus cardio just cut diabetes risk the most. It’s a real win for prevention.
